Contact Lenses & Care
The Plus: A deeper level of testing confirms renu® fresh multi-purpose solution is safe and gentle on eyes.
Corneal Biocompatibility: When used with soft contact lenses - including silicone hydrogel lenses - renu® fresh solution maintains tight cell junctions

In vivo testing at the cellular level confirms:1
- Corneas treated with renu fresh solution appear similar to an untreated cornea.
- Corneas treated with OPTI-FREE Express indicate a loss of tight cell junctions.
Further tests validate the gentleness of renu fresh solution:
Groundbreaking work with confocal microscopy show:2
- A deeper evaluation than corneal staining, which only assesses the epithelium at less than 1 micron.
- Corneas exposed to renu fresh solution contain significantly more mitochondria (the energy source for corneal epithelial cells) at various corneal depths - indicating the availability of more energy to maintain cell health.
1 Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images of rabbit corneas after wearing Bausch + Lomb PureVision® contact lenses for two hours that were soaked overnight in OPTI-FREE Express or Bausch + Lomb renu fresh multi-purpose solution.
2 Fresh bovine corneas were stained with a combination of the cell-permeable mitochondria and nuclear-specific dyes rhodamine 123 and Hoechest 33342 or acridine orange and imaged with a Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM). High-resolution X-Y images of corneal epithelium were taken using a Zeiss 510 CLSM at 0.44-062 μm Z step and 3-D images of the entire thickness of corneal epithelium were reconstructed. Semi-automated quantitative MatLab software analysis was applied to count the mitochondria in each optical slide. Corneas were treated for 30 minutes with OPTI-FREE Express and renu fresh solution and were investigated and compared to HBSS control.
